The Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge has embarked on an innovative initiative, transforming the mundane into art. By partnering with the Downtown Lethbridge BRZ, they've launched the Art After Hours project, which aims to bring life to the often-overlooked commercial security roll shutters across the city. This unique endeavor, as described by Executive Director Steven Foord, seeks to infuse vibrancy into the urban landscape by utilizing these shutters as a medium for public expression, particularly when businesses are closed.
One of the pilot projects' success stories is the collaboration with Fee Simple Law, where local artist Sheila Shaw's 'A Sense of Déjà Vu' adorns their roll shutters. The lawyer and partner at Fee Simple Law, Matthew McHugh, initially saw the potential in these shutters as a canvas, leading to a creative partnership. The design, inspired by historical maps of the city, adds a touch of local history and culture to the otherwise ordinary shutters.
The program's impact extends beyond aesthetics. By encouraging artists and businesses to participate, it aims to enhance the neighborhood's identity and create a more welcoming public space. Additionally, the project extends the lifespan of the roll shutters, potentially deterring graffiti and maintaining a clean and safe environment. The estimated minimum lifespan of the vinyl artworks is three to five years, ensuring a long-lasting impact.
The Art After Hours project is now inviting artists and eligible businesses to participate, with a focus on completing approximately five additional shutter projects. The program welcomes sites not only in the downtown area but also in the adjacent warehouse district, provided they meet the criteria of having good condition, publicly visible, and accessible exterior roll shutters. The fabrication and installation process is set for spring 2027, with the goal of completing the projects by June 30, 2027.
This initiative not only supports local artists but also fosters a sense of community and place. It's a testament to the power of art in transforming everyday objects into captivating public displays. As McHugh encourages, this project has the potential to inspire other businesses to embrace the idea of using roll shutters as a creative canvas, adding a touch of art to their daily operations.
